With the Super Bowl having winded down and the Denver Broncos crowned Super Bowl 50 champs, a lot of people's interest in sports goes way down. I'm here to tell you that there are still quality sports to watch. We hve 215 days until the 2016 football season, so here are things to watch until then.
If there is one name people have heard as much about as Cam Newton in the last week it’s been Golden State Warriors’ all league MVP and point guard, Stephen Curry. Not only is he setting records and breaking his own record, he is also breaking team records as well. Every Golden State game is worth watching as teams try to break their run at the 70+ win season and 95-96 Bulls record of 72-10. Their last game against Russell Westbrook and Oklahoma City Thunder at Oracle Arena proved to be a test, but ended 116-108 not breaking their home win streak of 41 straight. But, it’s not just Steph Curry on the Warriors who are interesting to watch. For example, there’s Andre Iguodala, Draymond Green, and Klay Thompson to name a few. Actually, Klay Thompson and Steph Curry are often called the “Splash Brothers” because of the amount of three pointers they “drain” per game. The team has proved they are explosive and are unstoppable despite the best teams in the league trying to beat them. The latest teams to try and best the Warriors were Houston Rockets and the Phoenix Suns, both losing. Portland also was the start of a 7 game road trip for the Warriors until March 1. The next team to take them on is the Portland Trailblazers in Portland on February 19.
If you don’t like basketball, there is another sport on during this winter months- hockey. Personally one of my favorite sports to watch because of how fast paced the game is and how exciting it can be. My favorite team, the Boston Bruins currently sit at third in the Atlantic division behind Tampa Bay Lightning and Florida Panthers. The top of the Metropolitan division is Washington Capitals and behind them are the New York Rangers and then in third are the New York Islanders. The Islanders just moved to the Barclays Center in Brooklyn at the beginning of the season after being on Long Island at the Coliseum. The top three of the Western conference are last year’s Stanley Cup champions: Chicago Blackhawks, Dallas Stars and Saint Louis Blues. Finally, in the Pacific division, topping the division is the Los Angeles Kings, San Jose Sharks and Anaheim Ducks. Coming up very soon is the trade deadline on Feburary 29th. The dealings teams make are to help them make a deeper run in the playoffs that begin in mid-April.
If basketball and hockey are not for you, then there is a third sport starting their pre-season soon- baseball. This season is much longer than any of the other three sports but can be exciting, and proved to be so for the New York area last year as the Mets made a run at winning the World Series. The Kansas City Royals won the championship last year for the first time in 30 years. They open their season at home against the Mets on April 3rd. Spring training provides warmer weather for those who make the trip to Florida to see this coming year’s most anticipated players such as the big signing by the Boston Red Sox, David Price. The team also picked up left-handed pitcher Roenis Elias from the Seattle Mariners. The former Red Sox first basemen Mike Napoli got picked up by the Cleveland Indians where former Sox coach Terry Francona currently coaches. Francona is sometimes referred to as Tito by both Boston and Cleveland. The biggest story out of Boston however, is the retirement of designated hitter and staple since 2003, David Ortiz. The New York Yankees season officially opens at their stadium in the Bronx on April 4th versus the Houston Astros.
There is a lot to keep track of in sports, but I hope everyone finds a cool sport to watch now that football is over!
