The first single off the highly anticipated and discussed solo album by former One Direction member Zayn Malik dropped at 11pm EST January 28. The album is entitled Mind of Mine and the single is “Pillowtalk.” As predicted by anyone who knows what happened to the internet when 1D surprisingly dropped “Drag Me Down” this past summer, this song also sent the internet into a teenage filled frenzy. In many interviews Zayn has talked about his reggae influences. He continued to say that he wanted One Direction songs to sound like his influences and music he likes but wasn’t allowed to due to their image and needing four other opinions counted on songs. iTunes describes his song as sizzling with emotion, which it definitely is, and to further himself from the ex-boy band look he drops an F-bomb in the chorus. I would definitely consider it poppy despite his efforts to avoid the pop music sphere.

The song overall is pretty good and I’m curious what his album will sound like, which I guess is the overall goal. Personally, I was not nearly as in love with it as some people seemed to be, as the song and video currently sits on top of the charts. People are definitely paying attention.
