Like many people, I went to see “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” twice during opening weekend. This movie not only lived up to my personal expectations but also broke all box office projections. The movie opened December 17th to the biggest box office numbers ever at $57 million. Harry Potter & the Deathly Hallows Part II at $43.5 million previously held the preview record.

The newest edition to the Star Wars franchise broke the Thursday night release record of “Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith” in preview numbers alone. This movie not only had one of the biggest opening weekends of the year but continues to break records for box office numbers.

Friday, December 18th, “The Force Awakens” set the record of a single day gross with $120.5 million. Saturday there was a massive decline, but it shot right back up at the box office on Sunday to break another record. “Jurassic World” previously held the record at $57.2 million and “The Force Awakens” broke it with $60 million.

With several massive movies opening on Christmas, Star Wars was predicted to plunge a little in the box office numbers. The other movies were Jennifer Lawrence’s “Joy” and Will Smith’s “Concussion” which already have Oscar nominations, but the box office proved they were no match against the fight for the galaxy. Many sites have referred to the movie’s holiday weekend as unprecedented. “The Force Awakens” smashed Christmas Day records with $49.3 million in the U.S. That was double the previous record held by “Sherlock Holmes” released in 2009. The movie is projected to hit nearly $450 million domestically by December 27th, with the global total heading towards $890 million. The movie has yet to be released in China. With that market, the movie is predicted to easily surpass $1 billion.

It was well worth the 10 year wait since “Revenge of the Sith” and people around the world are seeing this movie more than once in theatres. The movie currently sits at the fifth biggest in box office history both domestically and in Canada.
