PVRIS On Fire

PVRIS began receiving notoriety when they signed to Rise Records in early 2014 and released their first full-length album White Noise later that year. They have been on the touring circuit relentlessly and have not showed signs of letting up. PVRIS has played tours such as The World Tour featuring headliners Pierce The Veil and Sleeping With Sirens, Self Help Fest in California featuring a large roster of known bands, and played every date of the Vans Warped Tour 2015. This past summer they won a Kerrang! Award for the Best International Newcomer and a Skully at the Alternative Press Music Awards for Breakthrough Band.

This fall, PVRIS is on the road again with Bring Me The Horizon for a full U.S. tour and will also support Bring Me The Horizon in the U.K. for a short run. PVRIS is the opening band, meaning they are only given a 30-minute set to impress the crowd. Some bands struggle with a limited time slot and don’t fully engage the crowd; it isn’t always easy being the first band on stage. In many cases, fans don’t know the opening acts for huge tours like this one. They show up because they’re stoked for the headliner and don’t pay much attention to the first bands. That fact alone makes it that much harder for every band on stage that isn’t headlining a show, but PVRIS manages to do a great job. The trio, Lyndsey Gunnulfsen, Alex Babinski and Brian MacDonald, know how to engage a crowd and get them warmed up for the rest of the evening.

From the moment they step on the stage PVRIS demands your attention. They open

their set with their haunting title track “White Noise” and even if you aren’t familiar with

their music, you’ll be curious and pay attention to the rest of their set. PVRIS’ songs do not have a cookie-cutter sound and they definitely tell a different story than some people may be used to. When they perform live they’re energetic, captivating and plain fun to watch.

A favorite during their set is the song “Fire” to which all three members sidestep on

stage to the rhythm. When they were in the same rhythm and doing the same movements, it was fascinating to watch. Some stylistic performance ideals like this have been lost on other musicians but PVRIS’ genre of music is perfect for featuring this technique because it’s different, just like their sound. Another crowd favorite was the track “St. Patrick” to which everyone got off his or her feet for. “St. Patrick” is a very upbeat number compared to their other songs, but PVRIS had no difficulty getting the crowd to dance along.

The last song they played for the night was “My House” which has been a large

success for the band. Lyndsey Gunnulfsen (more commonly known as Lynn Gvnn) did an amazing job at getting crowd interaction for this song. Before anything, she asked “Whose house is this?” to which the crowd erupted with “MY HOUSE”. She asked this repeatedly, each time getting a little bit louder until she was yelling it. After the third or fourth time, the instruments finally started kicking in and the crowd was getting extremely amped. Most people were familiar with this track and the entire audience was singing along with them. It was a great way to end their set, full of high energy, a captivated crowd and tired performers, which seems like the best way to end a concert set.
