U.K.’s Neck Deep’s highly anticipated sophomore album, Life’s Not Out To Get You, was released August 14th and has since shown to be one of the
best alternative albums released this year.
LNOTGY is the band’s way of showing fans and the
industry that they are not going anywhere anytime soon. Unlike the debut album, Wishful Thinking, where the songwriting went from captivating lyrics to ‘who the hell cares’, LNOTGY keeps strong lyrically throughout the entire fifteen-track (deluxe version) album. From the nostalgic feels of old school punk rock to heart felt acoustics, there’s a chance you will be listening to each song on repeat for days on end.
Each track brings a different feel to the table, for example, “Citizens of Earth”, the opening song, gives a Sum-41 feel. While the center songs, such as “Kali Ma”, “Gold Steps, and “Smooth Seas Don’t Make Good Sailors” have Earth shattering choruses that seems to be impossible to not sing along to. To create an even more variety, the song “Serpents” becomes hands down the darkest song. The lyrics are heavy; critics have expressed that they are childish, and the overall song is extremely aggressive.
Slowing it down, Neck Deep expresses their softer side with the songs, “Lime St.”, “I
Hope This Comes Back To Haunt You,” and their only acoustic track, “December”,
while still keeping to their progressive instruments.
Finishing the deluxe album off is an all band version of “December” and acoustic
versions of “Lime St.” and “Can’t Kick Up the Roots.”
This album has it all, whether it’s to let out aggression by head banding and jumping
around or if you just need to sit in the dark by yourself.
